What Alberta Can Learn from Two Referendums
Quebec held two historic referendums on sovereignty—in 1980 and again in 1995. The second was decided by less than one percentage point, leaving lessons that continue to shape Canadian politics today.
As Alberta approaches the October 19 referendum, Lessons from Quebec brings together Maxime Bernier, Kathy Flett and Dr. Michael Wagner for an important conversation about what Albertans can learn from Quebec’s experience.
The panel will explore the political, cultural and personal realities surrounding Quebec’s referendum campaigns, including how the questions were presented, how supporters and opponents made their case, how Ottawa responded, and what happened after the votes were counted. The discussion will also consider what Alberta should begin thinking about now as the province prepares for its own major decision.
Hosted by Jason Lavigne of The Lavigne Show, this will be a thoughtful and informative public conversation. All perspectives are welcome, and attendees will have an opportunity to hear directly from the panel about questions that could shape Alberta’s future.
